Scientists have discovered a huge colony of penguins

A thriving super colony of some 1.5 million Adelie penguins has been discovered on the remote Danger Islands in the east Antarctic surprised scientists announced. Just 100 miles away in the west Antarctic the same species is in decline

Scientists discovered this previously unknown "supercolony" of Adélie penguins on the Danger Islands, a set of remote, icy islands on the northeastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula, according to a study released Friday. While a previous geological expedition30 noted the presence of Adélie penguins on all of the Dangers Islands (with the exception of Darwin Island, which was not visited), the presence of Adélie penguins on several of these islands went largely unrecognized until a recent Landsat satellite survey of the Antarctic identified several large penguin colonies supporting what appeared to be almost 200,000 Adélie penguin nests.

"It's kind of awesome that there's been this really large number of penguins breeding on these small islands in a remote part of Antarctica that sort of slipped under the radar for so long", co-author Michael Polito, an oceanography professor at Louisiana State University, told As It Happens host Carol Off.

That's promising news for a species whose numbers have been steadily declining over four decades amid rising temperatures and melting sea ice on the western side of the Antarctic peninsula. This suggests a large number of penguins in the area, so they arranged an expedition to the island with the objective of counting the birds.

The first evidence of the hidden penguin colony was emerged in NASA satellite imagery that showed large amount of penguin feces, also known as guano, in the Antarctic's Danger Islands.

Researchers estimate the Danger Islands hold the largest colonies of Adelie penguins in Antarctica and the third- and fourth-largest colonies in the world.

Researchers then examined satellite images going back to 1959 and realised that the colony has been stable since that time.

He urged that the Indian side should permit UNMOGIP to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions.

The duo teamed with ecologists from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and other universities in the United States and United Kingdom for an expedition in 2015.

"The automaton gives you a chance to fly in a lattice over the island, taking pictures once every second".

When the team got to the islands, they found thousands of penguins nesting at the landing site.

"We want to understand why". "I hope this provides impetus for a marine protected area in the Danger Islands with expanded borders from what has been proposed", Lynch says. The Danger Islands are surrounded by treacherous waters and are almost inaccessible in even the peak of summer, since the ocean nearby remains covered with thick sea ice.

Polito said he and his graduate students are conducting similar studies of the relationship between wildlife and their surroundings, including food sources and human-caused changes in their availability, in studying species along the Louisiana Gulf Coast.
