Facebook CEO apologizes for 'mistake' of blocking Catholic content

Facebook Shares Log Biggest Daily Gain In Nearly 2 Years After Zuckerberg's Testimony

The CEO emerged largely unscathed after a five-hour session before a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees Tuesday.

Facebook announced on Wednesday that it will no longer channel funds into an effort that opposed giving social media users more control over their personal data. "We also hope you can help clear up the considerable confusion that exists about how people's Facebook data are used outside the platform", he said.

Investigative reporter Julia Angwin says that Facebook is not the only company that collects data in this way.

But a year ago, Republicans were singing an altogether different tune when they rolled back the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Obama-era privacy rules. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico brought up Facebook's practice of collecting online information of non-registered users who, he pointed out, never have the opportunity to give their consent to it. Zuckerberg responded that this particular type of data collection is needed for security purposes, like preventing identity theft, which did not seem to satisfy Lujan's concerns.

Vince Mitchell: We could think about the potential 87 billion people whose data was compromised yet here.

What you post on the Internet is forever - even for the guy who harbors much of the world's personal information. Well, Zuckerberg, a.k.a Mr. Steal Your Data, has made three billion dollars just in the past two days.

His admission that even the company's tech-savvy founder was unable to protect his own data underscored the problem Facebook has in persuading skeptical lawmakers that users can easily safeguard their own information and that further legislation governing Facebook is unnecessary. Did Zuckerberg reveal we will all soon be paying for the site?

US to take another look at Pacific trade pact that Trump quashed
The request follows Trump starting a trade war with China that could impact American exports. There was a conflation that went on where it was said this is a trade deal with China.

You know, these are the kinds of things they'd like to know about you because they're hoping some advertiser will want to buy that ad category.

The Cambridge Analytica issue was the reason Zuckerberg was on Capitol Hill, answering questions about how that company - which has counted US President Donald Trump's election campaign among its clients - got hold of data about Facebook users.

Senator Ted Cruz (R. -Texas) confronted Zuckerberg about alleged bias and censorship of political and religious content on the technology platform, saying Facebook "has blocked over two dozen Catholic pages" as well as conservative content "after determining their content and brand were, quote, 'unsafe to the community'".

"That's why, every single time that you share something on Facebook or one of our services, right there is a control in line, where you control who you want to share with, because I don't just think that this is about a terms of service". Zuckerberg's notes also say that if asked if the company should be broken up, he should say that a breakup of Facebook would benefit Chinese companies. Since the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke, Facebook has been under intense scrutiny and new shady pieces of information about the social media platform's data policies continue to spring up almost every day.

"I started Facebook, I run it, and I'm responsible for what happens here", he continued.
