Severe weather expected to come through late tonight

As the work week ends, the Kansas City area is bracing for the chance of severe weather. If we see breaks in the clouds with sunshine Sunday morning, the atmosphere will become more unstable providing fuel for severe storms Sunday afternoon and night.

SATURDAY: Morning showers and storms may be ongoing but it's still hard to tell how widespread the coverage will be.

TORNADO THREAT: Medium threat in Arkansas with a few warnings possible Friday evening.

Storms beginning over north Alabama early Saturday will create a threat of winds up to 60 miles per hour and tornadoes through Sunday.

Isolated strong to severe storms will develop along a "dry line", a boundary that separates dry air to the west and humid air to the east. "It is really going to be quite nasty out there", the National Weather Service said in a forecast update Friday afternoon. "I encourage all residents to take steps now to prepare for the incoming weather and to adjust plans for tomorrow accordingly".

By Sunday, snow, at times heavy, will fall in portions of the upper Midwest, especially the northern Great Lakes. That line of storms could produce torrential downpours, damaging wind gusts, and frequent lightning.

A Flash Flood Watch will be in effect through Saturday night.

Late Friday night and early Saturday morning, potentially unsafe weather is expected to move into Northeast Mississippi. The Weather Prediction Center has about an inch of rain falling through Wednesday.

The primary threats include damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour. Late Saturday into Sunday some showers will arrive. We could be down to near 60° by late afternoon or early evening. As of this morning the warm front is struggling to move to the north, keeping much of central Iowa cloudy and cooler.
