Simon Harris to organise free repeat smear tests after cervical cancer controversy

Speaking outside the court afterwards, Ms Phelan said there were no winners in the proceedings.

Vicky Phelan's successful High Court award is an "exceptional outlier" and will not make it easier for other women to take a case, her lawyer said.

In July of that year Ms Phelan was diagnosed with cervical cancer and underwent radical chemo-radiotherapy.

The launch of a helpline for anybody with concerns about the cervical screening programme has been hit with technical issues.

Harris took to Twitter to confirm the repeat tests.

She was responding to comments by CervicalCheck clinical director Dr Grainne Flannelly, who said she could not be sure all of the women have yet been told about their reports.

Fianna Fáil spokesman on health Stephen Donnelly said the Government still had many questions to answer over the handling "of a litany of errors relating to the cervical cancer screening programme".

Alek Minassian showed little emotion as he made a brief appearance in a Toronto courtroom in a white jumpsuit and handcuffs. The confirmations will be done through dental X-rays, fingerprinting or, if necessary, DNA analysis, he said.

"The SIMT has sought a full review from the CervicalCheck programme of 206 cases whose cytology reviews suggested a different result from the original and that would have recommended an investigation to occur at an earlier stage", the HSE said in its statement today.

Health Minister Simon Harris also acknowledged the problem, tweeting that it was the "last thing anyone needed".

Ms Phelan spoke movingly of the impact the dramatic revelations of the last week and her powerful speech outside the High Court has had on her family.

It said that despite the controversy, it is "fully supportive" of CervicalCheck, describing it as "the best available measure we have at our disposal to detect cervical cancer early". Combined with the HPV vaccine, there is an opportunity to all but eradicate cervical cancer in the decades ahead.

Vicky Phelan was determined to have cancer three years after her spread test consequences of 2011 were mistakenly detailed as clear of variations from the norm.

The charity added that any woman affected by this story who needs support can speak to trained cancer nurses on 1800 200 700.
