Estimated 30000 march in Raleigh for more teacher funds, pay

Teachers walk in together as they arrive for work at San Marcos Elementary School Friday

She said lawmakers have let teachers down by failing to equip them properly to do their jobs.

Teacher walkouts this year have already occurred in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arizona and Colorado.

The teachers' group favors a proposal by Cooper to raise salaries by stopping planned tax cuts on corporations and high-income households.

The teachers are supporting a measure being pushed by the democratic governor.

State Sen. Paul Lowe, D-Forsyth, said he was moved by hearing another round of teacher stories, those from Forsyth and across North Carolina.

Barbara Faulkner, a 38-year-old English teacher at South Granville High School who makes $53,000 per year, said her house went into foreclosure because she had planned for a seniority-based raise plan that was stopped a decade ago. They said Republican leaders should be more concerned about doing more, given that North Carolina remains ranked in the low 30s for teacher pay nationwide. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, which looked at the percent change in K-12 funding from 2008 to 2015, adjusting for inflation, found that total state funding per student in North Carolina fell 12.2 percent since 2008. They also don't want lawmakers to pass any more corporate tax cuts until the per pupil spending reaches the national average.

Although the march and rally are primarily aimed at North Carolina's public education system, teachers from private and charter schools were in attendance as well.

The office of state Rep. Debra Conrad, R-Forsyth, had a "Welcome teachers" sign, red balloons and a desk full of teacher compensation charts and other Republican education talking points, including the GOP website.

The largest school districts in the state announced closures once it became clear that not enough teachers would be in the classroom.

It will be the first time that leaders of the United States and North Korea have met in person. The office reported that the exact date of the ceremony will depend on the weather conditions.

This peaceful rally comes on the heels of other protests by teachers hoping for better pay and resources in the classroom. "I just don't support the method".

But not all of them could make it.

- Invest more in spending per student.

"We are now about $2,400 below the national average in how we fund our public school children", Jewell said at a news conference in Raleigh earlier this week.

Jewell said teachers don't really expect the current leadership to meet all their demands, which is why they are also urging voters to not re-elect them.

"Despite the lack of information in the media and the politically motivated misinformation coming from the local affiliate of the national teachers' union, the numbers speak for themselves - and we're glad to have the opportunity to share N.C.'s success story and set the record straight", the legislative leaders said in a joint statement.

Carolynn Phillips, a middle school arts teacher from coastal Brunswick County who was named the county's Teacher of the Year for 2018, called the protest a cry for respect from teachers whose pay ranks toward the bottom of USA states. "But how do we pay for it?" said Cooper in a speech to the crowd. "My mom was a teacher and back in the 90s, she said that she had to do this and about every 20 years, you kind of need to get people's attention cause it just gets put on the back burner so much". "I know certainly at my school, so many young new teachers are only lasting two, three, at the max four years before they go into a new career".

"People always say "We support teachers" but they have to show it", Pitts said.

But with the Great Recession in the past and the state's financial stability restored, teachers say it's time to catch up on deferred school spending. Instead, she said she was mostly at the rally to support educators like the ones who teach her children.
