Harvey Weinstein turned himself in holding books -- what do they mean?

Harvey Weinstein expected to turn himself in to face sex charges

Evans' allegations added to those of dozens of other women, who claimed that Weinstein had engaged in a vast range of sexual misconduct dating back almost four decades, ranging from inappropriate touching to incidents of rape.

Weinstein will be charged over an allegation by at least one accuser, Lucia Evans, a former aspiring actress. He has been charged with first-degree rape and third-degree rape in one case and first-degree criminal sex act in another; he has since posted $1 million bail and agreed to wear a monitoring device.

The books he was holding appeared to be: Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution, by Todd S. Purdum (2018), Elia Kazan: A biography (2005), by Richard Schickel, and a notebook.

Film producer Harvey Weinstein surrendered to New York City police on Friday on charges of rape and sex abuse, months after he was toppled from Hollywood's most powerful ranks by scores of women accusing him of misconduct. The NYPD did the same, stating it "thanks these fearless survivors who have come forward". Brafman also has said that Weinstein was a "principal target" of an investigation being conducted by the USA attorney's office in Manhattan.

News broke yesterday that Weinstein would ultimately turn himself in today, which he did at just after 7:30 AM local time at a downtown NYPD precinct, while holding a small stack of books.

Weinstein has said repeatedly through his lawyers that he did not have nonconsensual sex with anyone.

More than 70 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct although the charges relate to only two of them.

Asia Argento and Rose McGowan took to social media on the morning of May 25 to react to Harvey Weinstein's arrest in New York City. The defendant surrendered his US passport and agreed to wear a monitoring device that tracks his location, confining him to the states of NY and CT. "We urge additional survivors and others with relevant information to call our Sex Crimes Hotline at 212-335-9373", District Attorney Cy Vance said. The Weinstein Co's board fired him and the company filed for bankruptcy in March. Investigators decided not to charge him even though there was an audiotape of Mr Weinstein accepting he had touched Ms Battilana's breasts and pledging not to do so again.

We really do hope Weinstein stays behind bars for a long, long time.

After sexual assault charges were dropped against former International Monetary Fund Chairman Dominique Strauss-Kahn in 2011, his lawyer Ben Brafman assailed the accuser's credibility, telling Reuters: "This encounter was quick, it was consensual and she was a willing participant". They did not identify the two women, but said the crimes took place in 2004 and 2013.

Attacking the credibility of accusers through tough cross-examination is a common defence strategy in rape and sexual assault cases, which often boil down to "he said, she said", according to NY lawyer Lisa Linsky.

Revelations in The New York Times and The New Yorker in the fall spurred official inquiries in New York, Los Angeles and London.

Evans confirmed to The New Yorker that she was pressing charges.
