Palestinian Militants Agree to Cease-fire with Israel

IDF destroys Gaza ‘terror tunnel’ extending 900 meters into Israel

Israeli sirens warning of imminent rocket and mortar strikes sounded late into the night and Israeli aircraft hit 55 militant targets in the Gaza Strip, including a cross-border tunnel under construction, the military said.

The Gaza border has been the site of mass protests aimed at lifting Israel and Egypt's blockade on the Gaza Strip which has been in place since 2014.

The armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the firing and said it was in response to Israel's killing of dozens of Palestinians since 30 March, mainly in Gaza border protests.

Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official, claims Egyptian mediators intervened "after the resistance succeeded in warding off the aggression".

A Hamas-affiliated Twitter account announced the cease-fire in the Gaza Strip would hold as long as the "occupier", or Israel, did the same.

A statement issue by the Islamic Jihad said that: "Egypt has requested a calming of the situation".

Israel has reportedly barred Indonesian passport holders from entering the country in possible retaliation for Jakarta's alleged decision to bar entry to Israelis in response to the ongoing violence in Gaza. Local hospitals also reported several light injuries, mainly caused by shrapnel, and one Israeli soldier was in moderate condition.

A picture taken from Gaza City on May 29, 2018, shows a smoke billowing in the background following an Israeli air strike on the Palestinian enclave.

Approximately 25 of the mortars were intercepted by Israel's missile defence system, he said.

USA delegation in N Korea to prepare for summit with Kim
The 2-hour meeting was held on Saturday at a facility on the northern side of the demilitarized zone between the 2 Koreas. Trump's back-and-forth over his summit plans with Kim has exposed the fragility of Seoul as an intermediary.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed on Tuesday to "respond to these attacks powerfully". But after Hamas wrested power over the strip more than a decade ago, Israel imposed a land and sea blockade on the enclave.

At least seven Hamas and its allies bases were struck, security sources in Gaza said. "I don't think serious people in Israel want to reoccupy Gaza", said Yaar.

In response to a question from Army Radio about Israel's relatively measured response to a barrage of mortar and rocket fire, Bennett said that Israel has to focus on the real culprit.

Hamas did not launch long-range rockets at Israel's heartland, even as salvoes from Gaza interrupted daily life in small Israeli border communities.

"All factions, including Hamas and Jihad, are committed to understandings for calm", Jihad spokesman Dawoud Shihab told AFP. "We will continue to act in Israel's best interests", he said.

Israel has fought three wars with Hamas since 2008. They attacked in the morning as Israeli children were walking to school.

Separately in the morning, Palestinians launched boats from Gaza to protest Israel's blockade in what they said would be a peaceful demonstration.

The violent clashes between Palestinian protestors and IDF on the Gaza border with Israel erupted in March when the Palestinians started their rallies called the Great March of Return.
