Philip Roth Once Torched Donald Trump In The Most Literary Way

Philip Roth

His death left the literary world in mourning for a writer celebrated for exploring American themes, the Jewish experience and male sexuality, often with darkly comic humor, whose work was once extolled by Barack Obama.

In a New York Times interview in 2018, Roth reflected on his 50-plus years as a writer, describing it as: "Exhilaration and groaning".

"We all wanted to be Philip Roth".

In the novel The Ghost Writer he quoted one of his heroes, Franz Kafka: "We should only read those books that bite and sting us".

After his 2010 novel, Nemesis, Philip went back and reread over everything he had ever written. In a particular conversation with him on occasion of publication of one of central novels of his extensive corpus, Pastoral Americana (1997), writer declared that for him to write entailed a painful delivery.

"What a marvelous, rigorous mind", he tweeted.

His titanic stature on the post-World War II literary scene came from the universality of his message - in his own words: "I don't write Jewish, I write American". Among Roth's most famous works are Portnoy's Complaint (1969), The Great American Novel (1973), My Life as a Man (1974), and I Married a Communist (1998).

His death was confirmed to The New York Times by his friend, Judith Thurman.

Roth was the recipient of two National Book Awards, two National Book Critics Circle awards, three PEN/Faulkner Awards, a Pulitzer Prize and the Man Booker International Prize. "Every year we talked about it, it became amusing", Savigneau said Wednesday.

Philip Milton Roth was born on March 19, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey, the grandson of European Jews who were part of the 19th-century wave of immigration to the United States.

In 2016, Roth bequeathed his entire personal collection of over 3,500 books to the Newark Public Library, which he called "my first other home" and where he spent time reading and writing while he was growing up. His father was an insurance broker.

For many, Mr. Roth would be inextricably linked to one of the great comic, sexually charged novels of recent memory, 1969's "Portnoy's Complaint", in which the lead character appears nearly overwhelmed with lust.

In addition to winning almost every literary award for writers in English, Roth was also embraced by the Jewish community over his long career.

"I did not want to, did not intend to, and was not able to speak for American Jews; I surely did not deny, and no one questioned the fact, that I spoke to them, and I hope to others as well", Roth wrote in his essay "Writing About Jews". It's enough. I no longer feel this dedication to write what I have experienced my whole life'.

The newspaper remembered Roth as "a passionate student of American history and the American vernacular".

Writing on "behaviour in extreme situations" was Roth's forte, tackling characters with "sheer playfulness and deadly seriousness", recording "life, in all its shameless impurity".
