Turnout high as voting begins in Ireland abortion referendum

Irish Women Turn Out in Droves to Repeal Constitutional Ban on Abortion

The poll sampled some 4,000 voters as they were leaving voting stations Friday night.

Ireland appears poised to overwhelmingly overturn a constitutional amendment that bans abortion in nearly all circumstances, according to a exit poll.

Overall, 68 percent of voters voted "Yes" versus 32 percent who voted "No", according to figures cited by The Irish Times.

More than 3.2million people are registered to vote in the referendum, with over 100,000 new voters registering to vote ahead of the poll. Currently, abortions are banned in Ireland unless the pregnancy poses a substantial risk to the mother's life. "I am conscious that in 1983 there was only a turnout of 55%, most people chose to sit out and I hope that won't happen on this occasion and I am really encouraging everyone to come out and vote", he said.

"I did a little volunteering to canvas, and when you go out to houses, talk to people, they really tell you their mixed opinions, so there's very complex views and I think it could be quite close".

The referendum was the result of a decades-long debate about abortion in the Republic of Ireland and was the country's sixth vote on the issue. Ciara Grealy, 21, from Dublin, said: "I don't know see we should export women to another country to have something that should be done safely and legally here".

Katie Ascough, a spokesman for the Love Both campaign, insisted, "I'm confident that the Irish people will reject this extreme proposal, and force the government to come up with a better plan than abortion for healthy mothers with healthy babies in Ireland".

Ireland has traditionally been one of the most religious countries in Europe. In Ireland, constitutional change requires a referendum.

Theresa Sweeney, a repeal supporter, was one of the first to arrive at a church polling station in Dublin.

Martial, Payet, Lacazette & Coman out of France squad
France manager Didier Deschamps has named his 23-man squad for the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup with some big names placed on standby.

"The heart of our Christian faith is that God took flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary and that he took on the human condition", remarked O'Domhnaill.

A breakdown of the poll suggested young people had overwhelmingly vote for "Yes".

.

It read: 'The state acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.' This gave equal rights to the mother and the unborn, but did not ban abortion. Beyond 12 weeks of pregnancy, termination would still be possible - up to 24 weeks - if two doctors determined that a woman's life was threatened by the pregnancy or that there was serious risk to her health.

"I'm a staunch No".

Official counting begins early on Saturday morning with an overall result expected by late afternoon.

Writing in the Times Ireland newspaper, Varadkar urged voters to put themselves in the shoes of an Irish woman dealing with a crisis pregnancy.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar tweeted his support for the bill before a moratorium on campaigning took effect Thursday. She said her friend had found seeing the omnipresent referendum placards distressing.

In the event of a Yes vote, the Government will introduce legislation permitting unrestricted abortion up to 12 weeks.

Women accessing illegal abortions can receive a maximum 14-year jail sentence, but the law allows them to travel overseas for an abortion, resulting in several thousand Irish women travelling to the United Kingdom each year to terminate their pregnancies.
