Giuliani, Echoing Leaked Memo, Says Trump Has "Broad Powers" Over Mueller Investigation

Trump Lawyers: A President Cannot Obstruct Justice

This Sunday, George Stephanopoulos goes one-on-one with President Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to discuss the Trump team's strategy in the Mueller investigation.

In addition to suggesting Trump may pardon himself, he said the president is unlikely to even give Mueller the time of day.

"It would be an open question", he added.

"I think the political ramifications would be tough", Giuliani told ABC.

Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said in an interview Sunday that the president holds Constitutional powers to pardon himself in the Russian Federation investigation or to terminate that investigation.

As Axios reported, Russian Federation investigation Special Counsel Robert Mueller is believed to have Trump under investigation for possible obstruction of justice, particularly for Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey in May of 2017.

Republican Reps. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Will Hurd (R-TX) on Sunday warned President Donald Trump against pardoning himself.

With regard to the president himself, the special counsel shifted focus from investigating collusion to an inquiry into whether Trump obstructed justice in several steps he took as president.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the Trump legal team's stance in their letter to Mueller is something you would see in a dictatorship. Part of the investigation includes whether Trump tried to obstruct justice in the federal probe of Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election.

In it they say he has absolute power as USA legal chief to end investigations, or "even exercise his power to pardon".

U.S. tariffs on steel will hit Canadian defence industry: minister
The interbank rate dropped 0.93% to 19.91 pesos to the dollar, while banks were selling pesos for as much as 20.35 to the dollar. The tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium , which affect the EU, Canada and Mexico , come into effect on Friday.

Numerous legal issues the president's team raised have little precedent, legal analysts said.

Why would Mr Trump need to pardon himself?

Mueller is wary of overstepping his authority just months before the midterm elections, Giuliani said.

Legal experts cited by the Times are divided on whether the president has the power to pardon himself, as no president has previously tried to do so.

Before delving into a detailed discussion of questions raised by Mueller, Trump's legal team points out that as the chief law enforcement officer in the nation, he has the power to terminate investigations and to pardon as he sees fit.

On Meet the Press, Giuliani further stressed that Trump would not pardon himself, though he noted that there's "nothing that limits" his power to do so for federal crimes. Mueller has requested an interview with the president to determine whether he had criminal intent to obstruct the investigation into his associates' possible links to Russia's election interference. They have to make a decision without him.

Legal analysts said that as the head of the executive branch, Trump could issue pardons, fire senior officials or order them to shut down investigations. "Should have told me!"
