Boris Johnson quits as British foreign minister

Michael Gove urges Tory unity

"The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work".

Brexit minister Steve Baker also left the Government, while Chris Green quit his position as an unpaid parliamentary aide at the Department for Transport.

Strung from a zip wire high above London while clutching two British flags, a harness tightly gripping his suit, is how many will remember Mr Johnson.

This is because, even though these hardliners don't yet have the 48 signatures needed to call a vote on her leadership (and certainly not the 159 needed to actually oust her), May's cobbled-together majority in the House of Commons is so slim that even a handful of them could derail the process.

Despite Labour hopes, it is hard to see the circumstances in which the country would be plunged into its third general election in four years.

May's proposals for a future European Union relationship after Britain departs from the bloc next March had taken two years of internal government wrangling to agree.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrives in London later on Tuesday for a meeting with May and other leaders to discuss the Western Balkans.

Rumours have swirled over possible further resignations but experts said May appeared to have weathered the crisis for now.

Johnson agreed to it at the time but has since reneged on his decision, writing: "On Friday I acknowledged that my side of the argument were too few to prevail, and congratulated you on at least reaching a Cabinet decision on the way forward".

But the ERG does have enough members to trigger a no-confidence vote if it decides it is the best - or the only - way of trying to force the prime minister's hand and persuade her to drop the painstakingly constructed Chequers compromise.

May has said she will fight off any attempt to unseat her.

#WC2018: Croatia beat Russian Federation on penalties to set up semi against England
With a penalty shootout looming, there was concern for Croatia as Subasic appeared to be struggling with cramp. In the 11th minute of extra-time Domagoj Vida nodded in, before Fernandes brought things level once again.

Senior lawmakers in her party said they did not expect the prime minister to face a vote of no confidence, although some Conservatives were still saying that she should go.

"Boris Johnson is a friend of mine", he added.

And of course, the Twitterati had their own meme and gif tributes to the shock exit, some supporting the opinions of Collymore that the incident is nothing more than an excuse for a good old jolly-up while watching the foootball.

"I get along with her very well, I have a very good relationship", he said.

"Unfortunately his contribution to the development of bilateral ties with Russian Federation was rather modest, to put it mildly", President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The appointment of Hunt, the long-serving health minister, sees a close May ally replace the maverick Johnson, and could alter the Brexit balance of May's top ministerial team.

Hunt said it was a moment to show that Britain remained a "strong, confident voice in the world".

The US president said it was "up to the people" whether or not Theresa May remained as prime minister.

May was thought to have united her Cabinet last week over the Chequers plan, which would see the U.K. leave the single market but follow a "common rule book" for trade with the EU.

A full-blown three-month contest would produce a new Prime Minister - and potentially an entirely different approach to Brexit - just weeks before the crunch Brussels summit in October at which Britain's withdrawal agreement is due to be finalised.

Europe's chief negotiator Michel Barnier said Tuesday talks will resume next Monday as scheduled with the new Brexit minister, while refusing to comment on the political infighting consuming London.
