Boris Johnson to make personal statement on his resignation from Government

Theresa May survives Tory pro-EU coup by six votes; Ex PMs Tony Blair and John Major call for second referendum

British Prime Minister Theresa May fended off a rebellion in the lower house of parliament Tuesday after narrowly defeating a Customs Union amendment by rebel Tory MPs that could have kept the United Kingdom in the Customs Union in the event of a "no deal" scenario post-Brexit.

An immediate threat to Theresa May's occupancy of 10 Downing Street appeared to be subsiding as a Tory MP withdrew his letter of no confidence in the prime minister.

After narrowly escaping defeat in parliament over her plans for leaving the EU, May signalled she would not drop a proposal on Britain's future relationship with bloc - the biggest shift in its foreign and trade policy for nearly half a century.

In doing so, May angered her more pro-European lawmakers, some of whom believe that hard-line Brexiteers want to sabotage the Chequers agreement, ensuring that the European Union rejects it and that Britain quits the bloc with no deal at all.

But by sticking to her plan for a "business-friendly" departure, May has thrown down the gauntlet to Brexit supporters and pro-EU lawmakers in her party who are at war with each other, and - for some - with the prime minister herself.

The meeting was held to discuss contingency plans for a range of scenarios, including a no deal Brexit.

The move is likely to outrage many members of the public concerned about the divisions over Brexit and the ticking clock counting down to exit day.

In a rowdy session of parliament, May was challenged by one pro-Brexit lawmaker in her party to explain when she had made a decision to change her catchphrase from "Brexit means Brexit", to "Brexit means Remain".

BREXIT supporter Andrea Jenkyns launched the first salvo in an open challenge to her leader, suggesting policies unveiled last week were closer to those who want to remain in the European Union than to those who want to leave. "And whether she can continue", Tory lawmaker George Freeman, who used to head May's policy board, said in a posting on Instagram.

Johnson resigned from government rather than accept May's plan.

A collection of jaw-dropping rallies treated fans as two of the sports' greatest stars duked it out on the British grass. The second semifinal then was halted when the third set ended just past 11 p.m., because of a neighbourhood curfew.

The others require the United Kingdom to have a separate Value-Added Tax regime from the EU and force the Prime Minister to table primary legislation if she wishes to keep Britain in the customs union.

The Conservatives leader will speak to businesses in the region about the challenges posed by Brexit.

One of the rebel amendments demands that the United Kingdom should scrap an offer to collect taxes and duties on behalf of the European Union unless the remaining 27 member states pledge to do the same for Britain.

Ms Greening, who grew up in Rotherham, where 68% people voted to leave the European Union, said the parliamentary stalemate "risks a no-confidence vote and, worse, a Corbyn government, which would be disastrous for the economy".

It should also be noted that just before the government won this crucial vote, they actually lost the vote on the previous amendment, only the second government defeat over Brexit in the Commons.

She received at least a measure of support from the 1922 Committee, including the announcement by one lawmaker that he had withdrawn a letter calling for a confidence vote that could threaten May's position as party leader.

But Mrs May insisted the amendments do not change the blueprint agreed at her country residence.

"If the final deal was watered down such that it is no longer Brexit, I would be prepared to vote against it", she said.

Sources close to Mr Johnson said he had received permission from Speaker John Bercow to make the brief statement, amid intense speculation that he may use it to attack Theresa May's approach to Brexit.

"The fact that they have no backbone and are unwilling to do what's in the best interests of the country tells you everything you need to know".
