Zimbabwe announces latest election results

Mnangagwa, a former deputy president who fell out with Mugabe and then took over from him, has said his showing in the presidential polls was "extremely positive" while urging people to wait for official results. "The atmosphere has remained peaceful across the country", she said.

Asked on the credibility of the elections, Justice Chigumba said she is "absolutely confident that the elections were not rigged and we want to show the world that we won't steal or subvert the will of the people".

Chigumba said most of the 11 000 polling stations have now completed counting the votes and only the verification process is underway.

"I am not shy to say I voted for Chamisa".

The commission said it would delay releasing any results of the presidential race until all the votes are collated.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission put voter turnout as high as 75% in some areas. "Waiting patiently for official results as per the constitution", Mnangagwa, 75, Mugabe's former right-hand man, said on Twitter.

At one polling station in the capital Harare, officials counted large piles of votes using gas lanterns and candles late into the night.

I'm really happy", added Alaphilippe, who also had some kind words for teammate Philippe Gilbert. Froome was among a large group of riders whose eyes needed treatment due to the tear gas.

The first election results are expected Tuesday afternoon.

Candidate Nelson Chamisa offered a tweet that was similar, saying his party is "resoundingly" winning.

Officials neared the end of vote counting a day after millions peacefully cast their ballots in a process closely watched by worldwide monitors, who have yet to announce whether the election was free and fair.

Elections under Mugabe were marred by systematic fraud and often deadly violence but campaigning ahead of Monday's vote was relatively unrestricted and peaceful.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said it had so far released results for seven parliament seats out of 210.

The two main contenders are President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former deputy president, and Nelson Chamisa, a lawyer and pastor who leads a coalition of opposition groups.

If required, Zimbabwe's 5.6-million registered voters would be asked to return to the polls to vote in a presidential run-off on September 8.
