Eleven men and nine women were killed. Most were from Switzerland but also a couple and their son from Austria.

Police had not provided an official toll by late Sunday morning, but said that five helicopters were involved in a search and rescue mission and the airspace over the crash site was to remain closed until late Sunday.

Although there were eyewitnesses to the crash, the BBC's Imogen Foulkes says that the investigation into what happened will take time.

The plane appeared to have hit the ground almost-vertically and at high speed, said Daniel Knecht of the Swiss transportation safety investigation board.

Knech also ruled out the idea that the plane had hit an object, such as a cable or another aircraft.

He also said there is no indication of foul play or that the aircraft lost parts or broke up before the crash.

The cause of crash is now being investigated by the Federal Prosecutor's Office, in partnership with local Swiss authorities.

Parts of Virginia city evacuated over possible dam failure
Since then, the city has continued to analyze the dam to determine how to move forward. The NWS issued a flash flood watch for the area that lasts until 11 a.m.

Police in southeastern Graubuenden canton (state) said a several-seater plane crashed Saturday on the Piz Segnas mountain above the Swiss Alpine resort of Flims, striking the mountain's western flank about 2,540 meters (8,330 feet) above sea level.

The plane had been returning from Locarno near Switzerland's southern border. The heat makes air thinner, increasing the burden on the aircraft.

The company's flight operations were suspended, it said.

The two pilots, who were 62 and 63-years-old, both had extensive experience with the Ju-52 and had long worked as airline and Swiss air force pilots, Waldmeier said. Its pilots are ex-military and professional pilots, all volunteers.

The aircraft have three engines, one on the nose and one on each wing.

"We can not yet explain what led to the tragic accident on Piz Segnas", he said.
