England v India: Joe Root breaks silence on Virat Kohli send-off

Donald Bradman remains the quickest batsman to 6,000 Test runs in terms of innings

After England, Australia have played the most Test matches (812), followed by West Indies (535), India (523), South Africa (427), New Zealand (426), Pakistan (415), Sri Lanka (274), Bangladesh (108), Zimbabwe (105).

India managed to get rid of Cook before stumps in England's second innings. A day that certainly belonged to Virat Kohli who will lead his team off the field here and take in the applause from the crowd as well. What a magnificient day for Virat Kohli and India!

Now England are playing their 1000th Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham under the captaincy of Joe Root against India.

England lost three wickets for eight runs in the next 25 balls.

After Malan put down a tough one-handed chance at second slip, Kohli settled then targeted Curran, first clipping him through mid-wicket then angling him down to third man.

Despite losing partners at regular intervals, Kohli's determination did not waver. "You want to try and pinch as many runs as possible".

Polar bear shot dead after attacking cruise ship guard
The Associated Press reports that 18 cruise ships are set to dock this week in Longyearbyen, Svalbard's largest settlement. A polar bear was shot and killed after it attacked a guard guiding tourists off a cruise ship on Saturday, officials said.

Virat Kohli's animated send off to his counterpart Joe Root's dismissal added a dash of drama to the proceedings on the opening day of the first cricket Test between India and England, here today.

Curran (24) had been the last man out for England, caught behind off Mohammed Shami (3-64), as England added just two to their overnight total. He still struggled to read which way Anderson was swinging the ball and the pace bowler found the edge of his bat four times.

Anderson was rewarded for his efforts with 2-41 while Adil Rashid, brought on to bowl at the tail, trapped Ishant Sharma lbw before dismissing Kohli to finish for 2-31.

But, not for the first time, he failed to convert a century into a hundred, although the fault lay as much with Bairstow as Root.

India opened with Shami, and in a surprise move, R Ashwin, hoping the offspinner could do what he did early in England's first innings.

Only Cook fell in the first session, his front-foot defence defeated by a flawless off-break from Ashwin - repaying his introduction in only the seventh over, despite being India's sole spinner here, with telling drift from round the wicket before the ball turned and dislodged the off-bail.
