Korea slams U.S. officials for sanctions

North Korea also accused unidentified high-level United States officials of "going against the intention of President Trump" by "making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the worldwide sanctions and pressure".

A recent diplomatic thaw culminated in a historic meeting between the North's leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in Singapore in June.

North Korea on Thursday denounced US calls for enforcing global sanctions despite its goodwill moves and said progress on denuclearization promises could not be expected if Washington followed an "outdated acting script".

The unidentified spokesperson also warned that there is no guarantee that the hard-won atmosphere of stability on the Korean Peninsula will continue.

A statement from the North Korean government, broadcast via the Korea Central News Agency, accused USA figures of spouting "falsehoods" about the North Korean nuclear issue.

Waving mini white and blue "unification" flags - a pale blue silhouette of the Korean peninsula - the head of the North Korean group, Ju Yong-gil, said the football game will "create momentum for reunification throughout all classes".

Pyongyang's state media has highlighted it has made goodwill gestures, such as a moratorium on nuclear and missile tests, the dismantling of a nuclear site, and the return of the remains of USA soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War.

Kim and Trump promised to work to end North Korea's weapons programs at their summit in Singapore, but the two countries have been struggling to reach a detailed accord to meet that goal.

Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, said this week that Pyongyang had not taken the necessary steps to denuclearize while U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Washington was "not willing to wait for too long".

On the same day a United Nations report, submitted after six months of work, accused North Korea of breaking previous economic sanctions.

The United States was "attempting to invent a pretext for increased sanctions against the DPRK".

Pyongyang also returned the remains of some U.S. soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean war in a gesture meant to break down mistrust between the countries, it said. American officials have been putting pressure on North Korea to follow its claimed suspension of nuclear tests and destruction of its nuclear test site with a handover of weapons.

National security adviser John Bolton earlier this week said North Korea had not begun the progress, while U.S. envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, said Washington was "not willing to wait for too long" for the North.

They said it had also not agreed to definitions of the key terms of any agreement, or to any inspection of its nuclear test site, which it claims to have decommissioned, but which US intelligence officials have said may still be operable.

The warnings come just days after North Korea's foreign minister called U.S. actions "alarming".

The UN Security Council first imposed sanctions on North Korea after its first nuclear test in 2006.
