Nvidia's using AI in chips to make video games even more realistic

At the event, Nvidia and DICE showed off what can be done with the Turing GPU architecture and real-time ray tracing in Battlefield 5, namely with regards to reflections. Nvidia took the stage today and delivered a press conference that announced a line of video cards based on the new Turing architecture. Say hello to the new GeForce RTX 2070, 2080 and 2080 Ti. Yup, NVIDIA is going to offer their reference cards with a factory overclock, that means that the founder edition cards are shipping with binned dies that allow for the best clocks and overclocking potential. Keep in mind that the new RTX GPUs start at $799, and go up to $1,199 for the RTX 2080 Ti, so the pricing of the Alienware machines will vary depending on which GPU you choose.

The GPU also includes a dedicated RT Core for ray tracing operations, with Nvidia promising a ray tracing capability of 10 gigarays per second; for comparison, a GTX 1080 Ti can manage about 1.21 Giga Rays per second according to Nvidia's calculations.

Previously, ray tracing - which is often referred to as the "holy grail" of graphics - was so computationally intense that most games relied on less accurate statistical light models to create the shadows and reflections see in a graphics. Besides the real-time Ray Tracing technology, the new RTX GPUs also incorporate the use of shaders and Artificial Intelligence. The RTX 2070 card comes with the same memory configuration at the RTX 2080, only sporting a handful fewer CUDA cores; 2,304 to be exact.

Nvidia has finally announced its new RTX 20-series graphics cards, with the RTX 2080 Ti taking pride of place at the head of the new family.

However, that's a big claim, and things are sure to differ on a per game basis, especially as many titles will require extra work from devs to support many of Nvidia's new RTX features. Metro Exodus will only be available next year, with its current release date set for 22 February 2019.

Starting at $499, GeForce RTX graphics cards, including the NVIDIA Founders Edition, will be available worldwide, across 238 countries and territories.
