Saudi decision to withdraw scholarship students will affect dozens in Calgary

Saudi Arabia Expels Canadian Ambassador, To Withdraw Students From Canada Over Women's Rights Criticism

But Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir tweeted that Canada's position was based on "misleading information", adding that anyone arrested was "subject to Saudi laws that guarantee their rights". Hariri later rescinded the resignation, widely believed to be orchestrated by Riyadh, and returned to Beirut.

The displaced Canadian ambassador to Saudi Arabia, who was given 24 hours to leave the country, has a lengthy diplomatic career.

First, the kingdom announced that it had expelled Canada's ambassador to the kingdom and frozen all new trade and investment transactions.

"Any other attempt to interfere with our internal affairs from Canada, means that we are allowed to interfere in Canada's internal affairs", the ministry said.

"They might want to send a signal that they simply do not want to hear this anymore", said Steinberg.

Bahrain said it supports the measures by Saudi Arabia in response to statements made by Canada's foreign affairs minister.

This move is the latest in a series of Saudi responses to a tweet on Thursday from Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, in which she calls for the release of Samar Badawi - sister of activist Raif Badawi - from prison.

Ms Badawi was given the US International Women of Courage Award in 2012 and is known for challenging Saudi Arabia's male guardianship system.

You may not be too surprised to learn that all the brouhaha started in the Twitterverse.

The latest arrests come weeks after more than a dozen women's rights campaigners were detained and accused of undermining national security and collaborating with enemies of the state.

Oil edges lower as supply concerns return
The group's 15 members, which now include Congo, collectively produced 32.6 million barrels per day. Total volume traded was about 30 percent below the 100-day average.

Prince Mohammed, heir to the region's most powerful throne, has introduced a string of reforms such as lifting a decades-long ban on women drivers in a bid to overhaul the kingdom's austere image.

Saudi women still need permission from male guardians to travel overseas or marry. "Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman is trying to pull off a very delicate process in which he liberalizes some aspects of Saudi society, which is extremely conservative, but also retains virtually absolute power over that society", Kliment said.

Saudi Arabia's state media threatened Toronto in this grim tweet.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry took exception to the use of the term "immediately release", calling it "unfortunate, reprehensible, and unacceptable in relations between states".

Strangely, in spite of all this, Saudi Arabia and the United States are still strategic allies. But the social media feud actually stems from a real life fight between the two countries.

A Twitter account linked to the Saudi government posted an image showing a plane flying towards the skyline in Toronto.

The image reminded many social media users of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, in which planes were deliberately flown into the World Trade Center towers in NY and the Pentagon.

The ministry said it ordered the owner of the account to shut it down while investigations are completed.

And the escalation continues. Investors are skeptical, given rash actions like these toward Canada. Meanwhile, Saudi students now studying here are being ordered to end their studies within a month.

It isn't clear what new business would be affected by Saudi Arabia's expulsion of Ottawa's envoy. "Impulsive foreign-policy decisions like this have the exact opposite effect".
