State Department Calls For Probe Into Deadly Airstrikes In Yemen

Airstrikes on a market in northern Yemen on Thursday killed dozens of people, including at least 29 children in a school bus, drawing worldwide condemnation and putting a spotlight on a US -backed Saudi military coalition accused of carrying out the attack.

The Saudi-led coalition, in a defiant statement, has described the massacre as a "legitimate action" to target missile launchers used by Houthi Ansarullah fighters to target the southern Saudi city of Jizan.

A Yemeni man mourns over the graves of his two children, who where killed when their bus was hit during a Saudi-led coalition air strike, that targeted the Dahyan market the previous day in the Huthi rebels' stronghold province of Saada on August 10, 2018.

Al-Malki insisted Thursday's attack carried out in Saada is a "legitimate military action" and is "in accordance with worldwide humanitarian law and customs".

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Washington did not have the full details of what happened on the ground, but said the U.S. was concerned about the reports.

A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates got involved in Yemen's civil war in 2015.

Fragments from a missile launched into Saudi Arabia from Yemen by Houthi forces killed one civilian and wounded 11, Saudi state media said on Thursday. There was no immediate comment from the Houthis in response to the coalition allegations.

CNN reported that dozens of children under the age of 15 were killed in the attack, and many more were injured, according to reports from Yemeni officials and the Red Cross.

"The Coalition will take all necessary measures against the terrorist, criminal acts of the terrorist Iranian-Houthi militia, such as recruiting child soldiers, throwing them in battlefields and using them as tools and covers to their terrorist acts", Col Al Maliki said.

The couple were found guilty of rape, sexual assault of children, forced prostitution and distribution of child pornography. Christian L, who violated a child contact order when he lived with the boy, holds previous convictions for paedophilia.

It also received 48 wounded people, including 30 children, it said.

But on social media, critics noted that other coverage of the air strike in the USA and Britain-which also supports the coalition-failed to acknowledge the countries' involvement in the war.

A child lies in hospital after the school bus he was on was allegedly attacked by the Saudi-led coalition.

Houthi media broadcast gruesome footage appearing to show the dead bodies of children.

Saudi Arabia says this was a legitimate military operation, targeting Yemeni rebels backed by Iran, its arch enemy.

"This latest air strike, only a week after the attacks on Hodeida city, demonstrates a continued disregard for human life and suffering", said Johan Mooij, the agency's country director in Yemen.

"It's hard to believe we live in a world where children should live in fear of such attacks, yet here we are", she added.

Global rights groups repeated calls for an end to the war and strongly condemned the bus attack and other civilian massacres.
