Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey explains what got Alex Jones suspended

Twitter suspends Alex Jones for a week for inciting violence

Twitter has suspended the U.S. conspiracy theorist Alex Jones for a week for breaking its rules against abusive behaviour.

Jones remains active on other platforms, including on Twitter via the InfoWars account, where he has posted a video response to his suspension.

A "false flag operation" is what conspiracy theorists refer to as a staged act of violence to influence public opinion.

Tweets by Infowars and Jones deleted last week included posts attacking transgender and Muslim people; a claim that the 2012 shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School was a hoax perpetrated by "crisis actors"; and a video calling David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland, Fla., high-school shooting, a Nazi. Much like Facebook, Twitter's policy calls for temporary suspension after an account repeatedly violates company rules.

But Dorsey did state that the first priority of Twitter is to "to put the safety of individuals first in every single thing that we do, and we need to enforce our rules and also evolve our rules around that".

"You think Alex Jones is going to change his behavior based on a timeout?" askedHolt.

Paul Joseph Watson, the editor-at-large for Infowars, posted a screenshot of a Twitter notice that said Jones had his account "temporarily limited" because he violated its rules against "targeted harassment of someone, or (inciting) other people to do so".

Twitter is citing Jones for a tweet linking to a live video of Jones talking about "web censorship".

Dorsey agreed with NBC News anchor Lester Holt when Holt said Jones' remarks were spine-chilling. 50,000 users blocked Twitter's top advertisers.

But the incident only intensified the growing criticism from conservatives that the site was targeting them over their beliefs and prompted Dorsey's outreach push. "We don't want any of our policies or enforcement or products to make decisions based on viewpoints and ideologies".
