Defending champion Sloane Stephens knocked out by Anastasija Sevastova

Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, the No.19 seed has ended the title defence of No.3 seed Sloane Stephens of the United States, with a stunning 6-2, 6-3 upset in the quarterfinals of the 2018 US Open on a sweltering Tuesday afternoon. Just simple: "Make them play an extra ball and see what happens".

Stephens was an 83rd-ranked outsider when she roared to the title a year ago, cementing her return from an 11-month injury absence.

Sevastova herself relies on variety more than power, and she caught a slow-moving Stephens with a number of drop shots and drop-shot lob combinations.

Recalling that 2017 victory, decided by a third-set tiebreaker, Stephens said: "I had to dig really deep".

The exit of the third seed means Karolina Pliskova is the only member of the top 10 remaining ahead of her last-eight clash with Serena Williams on Tuesday evening.

DeChambeau goes back-to-back at Dell
Amateur champion and has already developed a bond with Woods, looking to speculation about a possible pairing in France. Woods agreed to be a vice captain in late February, and he set a goal to be in Paris on September 28-30 as a player.

After taking a 4-1 lead in the second set, Sevastova admitted that memories of last year's quarter-final against Stephens flashed across her mind.

Indeed Stephens fought back to narrow the gap to 4-3, but Sevastova grabbed another break with a well-timed drop shot for a 5-3 lead and sealed the victory on her third match point when a tired Sephens put a backhand into the net.

"I think she played a really good match". Sevastova, forced out of the game by injuries in 2013 before launching a comeback almost two years later, showed some steely resolve, serving it out on her third match-point opportunity.

The 19th-seeded Latvian said the rigours of the tournament at flushing Meadows have not given her a moment to consider the long odds she overcame to regain her competitive form.

"I think you need some time to look at the journey - it was an incredible journey these three to four years", she added. Right now you're in the tournament, you're playing next tournament next week, and you don't feel it. "And when you're winning a tournament, you think that's normal". "After I stop, I will look back and be proud of myself, I am sure". Past year he lost a very tough match against Del Potro here. If you were defending, you'd be playing the same exact people all over again, which I didn't.

She then dropped her racket and held her hands to her face as a Stephens shot went into the net on the match's final point.
