Idlib offensive could spark 21st century's worst humanitarian catastrophe, United Nations says

Intense air raids reported on edge of Syria's rebel-held Idlib

Humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock said the regime's planned assault on Idlib would likely lead to huge numbers of civilian deaths, and perhaps the biggest loss of life this century.

The Trump Administration has calculated that Assad's defiance risks a domino effect around the globe.

The UN has said as many as 800,000 people could be displaced by a regime assault on Idlib and surrounding areas.

"We haven't said that the USA would use the military in response to an offensive", an administration official was quoted saying.

The United States has about 2,000 troops in other areas of Syria but little leverage in Idlib, which had been declared a "de-escalation" zone under an agreement reached a year ago between Russia, Turkey and Iran.

Erdoğan said the USA, which is focused on chemical attacks by the Assad regime, needed to "reject its arbitrary hierarchy of death".

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley echoed this warning on Thursday during a United Nations Security Council meeting on chemical weapons use in Syria. He spoke during a summit with the leaders of Russian Federation and Iran in Tehran.

A third US strike likely would be more expansive than the first two, and Mr. Trump would again have to consider whether or not to hit targets like Russian air defenses in an effort to deliver a more punishing blow to Mr. Assad's military. It's a magazine that's handed out free to school students in the U.S.to teach them the "history" behind these current events, though it conflicts with the actual history behind them: but, of course, those children won't know that history, because it's not being taught to them.

But Assad was not deterred from continuing to use chemical weapons that were supposed to have been removed from Syria in a 2013 deal brokered by President Obama to prevent further attacks.

She called specifically on Moscow to stop Assad's assault on Idlib, which she called "a reckless escalation even if chemical weapons were not used". "We don't want Idlib to turn into a bloodbath", he said. The third target was the Barzah Research Center, a military facility located near Damascus that conducted research, development, production and testing of chemical and biological warfare technology.

That's right, unnamed USA officials are now claiming to be in possession of intelligence which they say shows Assad has already given the order in an absolutely unprecedented level of "pre-crime" telegraphing of events on the battlefield.

US President Donald Trump warned last week against an offensive by the Syrian regime and its Russian and Iranian allies. "The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy", Trump tweeted earlier this week.

A previous chemical weapons attack in Douma, which killed at least 70 people, resulted in retaliatory strikes from American, British and French forces stationed in the Mediterranean. The Russian government claims that chlorine gas canisters have already been put in place in Idlib for use in the attack. The group also said the airstrikes caused a limited amount of internal displacement, uprooting almost 700 families from their homes in several parts of Idlib.

Syrian ground forces, however, remain on the outskirts of the province, awaiting orders to invade.
