Kavanaugh pledges to be 'team player' on Supreme Court

A protester is removed as circuit judge Brett Kavanaugh prepares to testify before his Senate confirmation hearing to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington DC USA 04 September

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh repeatedly stressed the importance of judicial independence as he faced questioning at his confirmation hearing Wednesday from senators, including Democrats who fear he would be President Donald Trump's man on the high court.

He also said 70 people in the audience were arrested. Patrick Leahy of Vermont.

Evidence has emerged, the report said, that one protester "may have been coerced into her activism with cold, hard cash". Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein asked during the second day of Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings. "It has been reaffirmed many times over the past 45 years".

Protesters continued their efforts to interrupt the hearings, but senators basically ignored their shouts as they were removed by police.

One TV viewer gave Kavanaugh a rave review.

In her remarks, Klobuchar suggested that 1) aspects of the Trump presidency to date have left her anxious that Trump's willingness to abide by laws and precedents; 2) that Kavanaugh's position on the three-judge panel left her anxious that as a Supreme Court justice he might take an extremely expansive view of presidential power and 3) that that might be among the reasons Trump wants him on the Supreme Court.

"That's a hypothetical question". Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley was tasked with making the opening remarks at the hearing and after a long period of interruptions made a decision to proceed with the opening statements over the shouts of protesters. "A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law", he said.

Kavanaugh mentioned the 1954 Brown ruling ending racial segregation in public schools and a 1974 ruling ordering President Nixon to hand over subpoenaed materials during the Watergate scandal as examples of judges making tough calls despite intense partisan pressures.

Lawyers who had argued cases in front of Kavanaugh recalled him as an active questioner from the bench, and a very well prepared jurist who would fit in on a Supreme Court whose justices are largely not shy in oral arguments with advocates.

Trump, could face a subpoena in the case, and the top Democrat on the committee, Sen.

"They were some ideas for Congress to consider".

One big reason Kavanaugh is so unpopular may have nothing to do with him personally, and is more about the Republican Party's clear desire to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Spacey avoids prosecution in assault claims
Beverly Hills police previous year investigated Seagal after a woman reported he had raped her on January 1, 1993. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office made no comments today on the merits of the accusations.

"Respect for precedent is important". Kennedy was a solid conservative but sided with the court's liberals on some issues, including abortion and gay rights.

Hatch asked Kavanaugh about the Chevron doctrine, which takes its name from a 1980s Supreme Court decision that instructs federal courts to defer to a government agency's interpretation of ambiguous law. Just 38% of Americans say that Kavanaugh should be confirmed, while 39% oppose.

"If the President does something dastardly, the impeachment process is available", Kavanaugh wrote.

Feinstein's assertion that more people would die if Kavanaugh would be confirmed because of his pro-gun stance and his refusal to agree with her assault weapons ban is nothing shy of anti-gun rhetoric at its finest. Members from both sides of the aisle will have an opportunity to debate the confirmation of Kavanaugh, as well as question Kavanaugh himself.

Kavanaugh said he had known nothing about the allegations until they were disclosed previous year.

"My mom taught me in the first instance, judging is not just about theory", he said. "They were not my constitutional views", he told the panel.

Under George W Bush, he served as deputy White House counsel and, from 2003-06, as Mr Bush's staff secretary. Many are being held as confidential within the committee.

But, today, we started to get that.

Kavanaugh says he didn't have any knowing involvement in the email scandal. "I do not believe that's consistent" with the way prior nominations have been handled.

Shrieking protesters also disrupted the hearing. Republicans want to put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court before the November midterm elections.

Republicans will hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate once Jon Kyl, the former Arizona senator, is sworn in to fill the seat held by the late Sen.

Democrats questioned Kavanaugh's judicial philosophy and even his honesty. He is up for re-election this fall in a state Trump won handily in 2016.
