Serena Williams's husband calls controversial Australian cartoon of star 'racist' and 'misogynistic'

Image Artist Blasted for Racist Depiction of Serena Williams at U.S. Open Image #2

A controversial cartoon of US tennis star Serena Williams, showing the player as having a temper tantrum at the US Open, has been reprinted in an Australian newspaper.

"World's gone mad when cartoonist is targeted for saying tennis player spat the dummy-so sick of PC BS as too many confect an issue to be outraged about-that's what this is about". The Herald Sun and Knight deny the cartoon is racist. They say I'm racist because I drew Naomi Osaka in the background with blonde hair.

"The enlarged facial features and the position of a dummy in the cartoon draws on pernicious stereotypes of African Americans as angry, childlike and in need of restraint by white masters", says Dr Kate Dossett, associate professor of United States history at the University of Leeds.

Knight said he has received death threats over the cartoon and his Twitter account has since been deleted.

Do you think the Herald Sun cartoon was racist?

Herald Sun editor Mark Johnston tweeted that Knight has the "full support" of the paper. In the cartoon you can see his depiction of Serena stomping on a tennis racket while a pacifier lies on the ground next to her.

Williams, who was thwarted in her bid for a record-tying 24th Slam singles crown in losing to Japan's Osaka, said she was punished for saying something where men have said far worse without incurring such a penalty. He had given her a warning for coaching, then a point penalty for smashing her racket and, after she repeatedly expressed frustration, including calling him a "thief", Ramos levied the game penalty for verbal abuse. The umpire was shown telling a blond, slender woman - meant to be Osaka, who is Japanese and Haitian - "Can you just let her win?"

USA ups pressure on Palestinians, closing Washington mission
Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home) called the measure a "New Year's gift" to Israel and the Jewish people. Jordan, a US ally, said the decision would only fuel radicalism and harm prospects for Middle East peace.

And the editor of The Herald, Damon Johnston, said: "The cartoon is not racist or sexist... it rightly mocks poor behaviour by a tennis legend". "It had nothing to do with gender or race".

Williams, who was ranked 17th in the world, lost to 20th ranked Osaka, 6-2, 6-4, on September 8. Poor behaviour in any sport needs to be called out.

Williams was "simply outplayed and lost her temper in a enormous and ill-disciplined blow-up", the column said.

"Mr. Ramos" decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules and were reaffirmed by the U.S. Open's decision to fine Serena Williams for the three offences'.

However, it was quickly slammed by critics around the world who compared the image to a Jim Crow-era representation of black women.

"People said I'm a racist because I drew Serena as an African American woman", Knight explained.
