WTA chief backs Serena in US Open 'sexism' row

Serena Williams argues with officials during her 2009 U.S. Open semifinal loss to Kim Clijsters

Serena Williams, right, talks with referee Brian Earley during the women's final of the US Open tennis tournament against Naomi Osaka, of Japan, Saturday, September 8, 2018, in NY.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion was warned for receiving coaching from the players' box during Saturday's final, triggering a row with the chair umpire in her 6-2, 6-4 loss to Naomi Osaka.

"I can never truly appreciate the real sexism and racism that Serena Williams will have absolutely faced in her life and career", Ings tweeted, after also sharing a clip of Mouratoglou coaching during the match.

Then came the second violation, where Serena smashed her racquet in frustration and was docked a point.

Williams argued on court with tournament officials, claiming she was being treated differently to how a man would be in such circumstances, a theme she continued in her press conference. "To see her still being so dedicated and so committed to this sport, it's inspiring really to me and to many tennis players, both men and women, around the world". This prompted a heated dialogue with the umpire Carlos Ramos.

"I just want to tell you guys she played well and this is her first Grand Slam", Williams said, as cheers erupted. We're gonna get through this, and let's be positive.

"He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief.' For me it blows my mind".

Fairytale ends but surge whets Millman’s appetite for big time
She won 59 points to just 28 for the unseeded Ukrainian, who knocked off No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the second round. Suarez celebrated her 30th birthday with a victory over five-time Grand Slam victor Maria Sharapova on Monday.

Her only previous final was in September 2016, when she went down 7-5 6-3 to Caroline Wozniacki in the Pan Pacific Open. The American has since received support from various current and former players, and on Sunday night, moments after Novak Djokovic won the men's title, the WTA chief executive, Steve Simon, released a statement. "She is at the forefront of the next generation in women's tennis, someone possessing quite a mixture of powerful serve and strokes, enviable court speed and a preternatural calm".

After serving out the match, Osaka showed her softer side, bursting into tears as boos rang out from fans still outraged over her opponent's bust-up with Ramos.

Tennis Champion Serena Williams has been fined $17,000 by the US Tennis Association for three code violations at the US Open, Sky News is reporting.

He said the interventions by umpire Carlos Ramos were "unnecessary" and said they "changed the course of the match". After a couple minutes of seemingly random thank you's and giggling throughout, she closed by saying, "This is probably gonna be the worst acceptance speech of all time".

The tension between Serena and the umpire continued to simmer, and it was the third violation, where Ramos accused Serena of verbal abuse, that really saw things get nasty.

Serena Williams has to pay for the fines out of her $1.85 Million tournament winnings.
