Asif debuts as Pakistan bat; Finch, Head, Labuschagne handed first caps too

Tim Paine

When Day One of the first Test between Pakistan and Australia went underway in Dubai on Sunday, a rare instance in Test cricket was witnessed in which the captains of both the teams - Sarfraz Ahmed and Tim Paine -were wicketkeepers. Things will get tougher for Australia on a crumbling pitch and their biggest hurdle - the spin.

Australia openers Usman Khawaja (17) and Aaron Finch (13) negotiated that session well but there are signs the ball is beginning to turn which will encourage Pakistan's trio of slow bowlers.

The left-hander occupied the crease for more than six hours as he struck 110, adding 150 with Asad Shafiq (80) for the fifth wicket, as Pakistan posted a first innings total of 482. Australia still trail Pakistan by 452 runs.

The pair frustrated the Australian attack with some solid batting as Pakistan reached 329-4 at lunch, with both in sight of centuries.

Part-time leg-spinner Labuschagne finally broke through just before the tea break when he lured Shafiq to drive the ball away from his body and got the thick outside edge to Paine behind the wickets.

Tua Tagovailoa opened Alabama's game vs. Arkansas with a flawless stat line
Backup quarterback Cole Kelley threw the second touchdown, faking the run before pulling up and firing a 3-yard pass to O'Grady. But Smith's teammate, Henry Ruggs III, was there to pick it up at the 12 and took it in for the touchdown.

Sohail did to get to three figures though, hitting a six off spinner Jon Holland before cutting him to third man for two to complete his century.

"I was getting out on 30-40 runs on the tour of England (in May-June this year)", said Sohail.

Paceman Peter Siddle gave Australia an early breakthrough when he bowled nightwatchman Abbas for one with a hint of reverse swing.

The second and final test will be played on October 16 in Abu Dhabi.
