Brazil's far-right president-elect eyes close United States ties

Others said that Bolsonaro and President Donald Trump shared similar positions which would lead to a mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.

The protests on Tuesday were small compared to the thousands of Brazilians who went on to the streets on Sunday to celebrate the victory of Bolsonaro, who will assume the presidency of Brazil on January 1.

Mr. Bolsonaro, the so-called "Trump of the Tropics", is a notoriously divisive figure, whose hardline approach has deeply divided Latin America's largest country. Bolsonaro won 55.2 percent of votes in a run-off election against left-wing hopeful Fernando Haddad of the Workers Party (PT), who garnered 44.8 percent, according to electoral authority TSE.

Bolsonaro, who early in his legislative career declared he was "in favour" of dictatorships and demanded that Congress be disbanded, vowed after his Sunday night win to adhere to democratic principles while holding up a copy of the country´s Constitution.

Mr. Bolsonaro brings to high office the promise to reduce regulation and tax and boost investor confidence, and also the threat to more extensively exploit Brazil's vast natural resources, including the Amazon rainforest; he has proposed to build a highway through it.

"It's one thing to govern using social networks when it doesn't matter what you say; the economy is doing well", said Joel Velasco, a principal at the Albright Stonebridge strategy group and former advisor to the U.S. ambassador in Brazil.

Despite relatively robust legal protections, Brazil is already the deadliest place for environmentalists, with pressure group Global Witness recording 57 deaths of people protecting land there a year ago. "Bolsonaro is more convincing to Brazilians than his opponent was on issues like anti-corruption, security and, most importantly, the economy".

He noted that Nigeria shares historical and cultural ties with Brazil.

Onyx Lorenzoni, a fellow congressman whom Bolsonaro has tapped as chief of staff, told journalists that Guedes would be responsible for structuring the government's relationship with an independent, autonomous central bank with targets.

"If you add up the importance of the state, his very radical discourse and the fact that he is from the military and surrounded by military people, I would say that we have a lot of things to worry about, maybe even more than Americans have to worry about Trump", Zucco Jr. said.

Bolsonaro appeared in public Tuesday for the first time as president-elect.

Sanders said the USA values its longstanding relationship with Brazil.

Bolsonaro plans to be here on November 6 to meet with outgoing President Michel Temer.

But Bolsonaro and Trump face fundamentally different backdrops, with the Brazilian leader elected in the wake of economic crisis.
