Google bends to protestors' demands after sexual harassment 'walkout'

Watch Google employees stage global protests

"Going forward, we will provide more transparency into how you raise concerns and how we handle them", Pichai wrote in the email.

In an e-mail to staff, Google said it was meeting one of their key demands by ending "forced arbitration" in cases where a staff member makes a sexual harassment claim.

Google will update its mandatory sexual harassment training, and require it annually instead of every two years as had been the case.

In an email to employees, Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said it was clear that the company needed to make changes to protect its workers.

However, the Tech Workers Coalition, which launched a retaliation hotline for Google employees who participated in last week's protest, says that the new policies don't do enough to protect those temp, vendor and contract workers (TVCs), the report said. The note of contrition came a week after the tech giant's workers left their cubicles in dozens of offices around the world to protest management's treatment of top executives and other male workers accused of sexual harassment and other misconduct involving men. The company will not accept harassment and alcohol as an excuse. "This is an area where we need to continually make progress and are committed to doing so".

The last couple of weeks haven't been great ones for Google.

The hosts nearly levelled just five minutes later, as they hit the woodwork for second time in the match when Nikolai Signevich diverted the ball onto the crossbar.

Campaigners hope the promised overhaul of how Google handles issues around sexual harassment will remove a culture of secrecy that saw one high-profile engineer leave the company with an $90m pay out, despite "credible" claims of inappropriate behaviour. He was part of a senior-level "protected" by Google, while the group knew accused of harassment, according to the NY newspaper.

CEO Sundar Pichai spelled out the concessions in an email sent Thursday to Google employees.

The organisers of the protest said they were planning to meet further with Google leadership to meet more of their demands. The protest was prompted by a New York Times article last month that revealed the company had given a senior executive, Andy Rubin, a $90 million exit package even after it found he had been credibly accused of sexual harassment.

In a memo, Pichai announced the new policy, while also defending Google's general policy of forced arbitration by claiming it never required confidentiality. Google states that "excessive consumption of alcohol is not permitted when you are at work, performing Google business, or attending a Google-related event, whether onsite or offsite".

In a statement organizers commended Google for the response, but said more changes are needed.

Other commitments which Google has agreed to include the provision of regular, detailed reports about the occurrence of harassment claims and whether they led to the dismissal of staff members involved, and the publication of an internal guide on the investigation processes of harassment cases in the company and others.
