Trump says midterm elections a 'tremendous success'

Donald Trump

Though the size of Democrats' majority was still in doubt, networks projected they would at least net the 23 seats needed to take over when the new Congress convenes in January.

Democrat Ed Rendell served as Pennsylvania's 45th governor and also served as mayor of Philadelphia.

"Bottom line: anything from a Democratic gain of 20 to 45 seats remains well within the realm of possibility, but a gain of 30 to 40 seats - and House control - is the most likely outcome", Wasserman wrote today in an online post.

The Republicans held on to the Senate and narrowly survived a number of big individual races, including in Florida.

That ensures the GOP will be able to confirm Mr. Trump's nominees, including judicial picks.

At stake was control of at least one house in the United States Congress, and with it Trump's ability to drive ahead with an unconventional style of government that has divided Americans like rarely before.

Neither was there a "red wave" for the GOP, but the expansion of its majority in the Senate is significant for future Supreme Court nominations, with Brett Kavanaugh having been confirmed by a mostly partisan 50-48 margin. Trump was badly underwater among women voters - who favor Democrats 62% to 35% - a gender gap, that if borne out by real votes, could prove devastating to Republican hopes.

Mr. Trump called Mrs. Pelosi just before midnight to congratulate her and acknowledged her calls for bipartisanship, a Pelosi aide said.

If Democrats capture the House, they could block Mr Trump's policy agenda and launch congressional investigations into Trump's administration, including his tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and the nature of his 2016 campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

"That's what America wants to see".

But the first thing to remember is that while Trump's ascent to the presidency in 2016 was certainly a surprise, the polls were not, in fact, wildly inaccurate. Still, Republican voters tended to be overwhelmingly supportive of the president.

In Cleveland, Trump bashed DeWine's Democratic opponent, Richard Cordray, whom he declared "a bad person" who "has hurt a lot of people". Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota.

Iran sanctions: "Maximum" economic pressure, Treasury's Mnuchin says
We've got Brent crude at about the same price it was back in May when the president announced the withdrawal from the JCPOA. The Trump administration has reimposed all sanctions previously put on hold under the Obama-era Iran Nuclear Deal.

In Florida, incumbent Democratic Sen.

"I don't know what the final result tonight will be, but the fact that we've had even a narrow path to winning the Senate is a testament to the hard work you've put in over the past two years", said Sen. "We faced the toughest map in 60 years - and we didn't give up or back down".

Mr Trump's party is projected to hold on to the upper chamber in Congress, where they now hold a slim 51-49 majority.

Meanwhile, two of the most-watched races - for governor and senator in Florida - appeared headed for the kind of nail-biting close finish for which the state is famous. Perhaps more important, they would claim subpoena power to investigate Trump's personal and professional shortcomings.

Voters are feeling better about the state of the economy than they have since before the Great Recession of 2008.

That was enough for Karim Elmalki, voting in Sterling, Virginia. "I remember coming out of the White House one day in August and realizing it was the first time I'd been outside when the sun was still up in a long time", said Democratic strategist Chris Lehane, who worked in the Clinton administration during the Whitewater scandal.

Republican gains in the Senate are sure to bolster the party's efforts to ram conservative federal judges through confirmation proceedings during a lame duck session that starts next week, as well as next year. Only 1-in-5 decided in the last month and even fewer said they made up their mind in the last few days or the last week.

The S&P 500 has risen 28 per cent since Trump's election in November 2016 to the eve of congressional midterm elections on Tuesday.

Almost two-thirds said Trump was a reason for their vote.

"I am extremely happy with the economy", Gerlock said. But it's also possible that Democrats will falter.

A Democratic victory in the House would further hinder the border wall plan and complicate congressional approval of a deal to update the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Republicans entered Tuesday with strong prospects of keeping their Senate majority but the victory by GOP challenger Mike Braun over Sen.
