Kerch Strait incident in a nutshell: Putin tells Trump what happened

Vladimir Trump

"I replied to his questions about the incident in the Black Sea", Putin told reporters at the end of the summit.

On the eve of the summit, Trump announced that he would not hold a formal one-on-one meeting with Putin, citing last week's clash in the Kerch Strait, in which Russian Federation detained three Ukrainian ships and 24 sailors.

"Based on the fact that the ships and sailors have not been returned to Ukraine from Russian Federation, I have decided it would be best for all parties concerned to cancel my previously scheduled meeting in Argentina", Trump tweeted Thursday on Air Force One on his way to Buenos Aires.

Gabriel's remarks came after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko suggested that Berlin provide military assistance to Kiev.

"I think Mr. Putin has much more clear objectives out of his relationship with United States than what President Trump has with Russian Federation".

Russia accused the Ukrainian vessels of violating Russian territorial waters, a charge Ukraine has denied. The leaders agreed to hold more talks on the dispute.

In addition, the Russian leader expressed regret that he could not have a full-length meeting with Trump.

Her main focus, however, was on the situation in Ukraine.

"The freedom of shipping traffic in the Sea of Azov. must be ensured". There is a basic contractual agreement from 2003 on this. Pompeo said Trump made this decision to "tell the Russians return the sailors, return the Ukranian equipment, it is theirs, people need to be returned to their families--he wanted to send an unambiguous message that the Russians need to change that". "Russia must stick to this", she said.

But an informal chat between Trump and Putin went ahead on the sidelines of the summit regardless.

Far from offering comforting words, Putin said at a post-summit press conference he saw no end in sight to the four-year conflict in eastern Ukraine "as long as the current Ukrainian authorities remain in power".

The November 25 incident was the first direct military confrontation between the two countries since Russian Federation annexed Crimea in 2014.
