Quake Aftershocks Rattle Alaska, Fray Nerves

A 7.0-Magnitude Earthquake Just Shook Alaska

Walker said sometimes people, including himself, grouse about stringent building codes.

Dozens of small temblors shook parts of Alaska Saturday, a day after a powerful 7.0-magnitude natural disaster buckled roads, damaged buildings, knocked out power and frayed nerves, according to reports. "I would characterise this as a demonstration that Anchorage is prepared for these kind of emergencies".

There's been damage to buildings and infrastructure but no immediate reports of serious injuries or deaths.

"If you can see through the walls, it's not good, evacuate, go to a neighbor's house, if your house seems to be leaning, it's not good, if you smell gas, go out, "said Anchorage fire chief Jodie Hettrick".

By mid-morning, there had been about 550 aftershocks, including 11 with magnitudes of 4.5 or greater, Caruso said.

The quake, followed by numerous aftershocks, produced strong shaking within a 30-mile (50 km) radius of its epicentre, with ground movement felt as far away as Fairbanks, about 350 miles to the north, the USGS reported. But the quake that hit Anchorage on Friday got everyone's attention.

Empty shelves where bread is normally located are shown at a grocery store in Anchorage, Alaska, on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, two days after a magnitude 7.0 natural disaster was centered about 7 miles north of the city.

"The most striking thing about this event was that it was so close to Anchorage", Hayes said. Work also continues to clean up extensive water damage the railroad's operation center in Anchorage.

Southern Alaska has a high risk of earthquakes because of tectonic plates sliding past each other under the region. In court, panicked attorneys scurried under tables as a room rocked from side to side.

Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz says the city is on the road to returning to normal a day after a magnitude 7.0 quake struck.

Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency Rosaviatsia said Friday it is ready to promptly consider requests from foreign airlines to change their itinerary over the Russian territory following a powerful quake in the U.S. state of Alaska.

Palmer resident Kristin Dossett described the initial jolt as "absolutely terrifying".

Trump reaffirms plan for second North Korea summit plan
About 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea, mostly traveling via China, since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. The North Korean leader said he would visit Seoul "in the near future", during his third summit with Moon in September.

"We are praying for the safety of all Alaskans!" she said.

"Thankfully I pulled over when I did", he said.

"It just didn't stop". But once we realized we had to get under the desks and it kept going, people got scared.

Authorities don't have firm figures on damage yet.

Anchorage's school system canceled classes through Tuesday while it examined buildings for damage.

Books and ceiling tiles litter the floor at theThe Mat-Su College library in Anchorage. Both attorneys jumped under their desks.

The National Weather Service initially said there was no tsunami danger, but a few minutes later the agency said on Twitter that there was a warning in place for Cook Inlet, which links Anchorage with the Gulf of Alaska.

He called it the most significant quake in Anchorage since 1964.

A strong aftershock, measuring magnitude-5.7 shook the earth soon after and a tsunami warning was briefly issued for some areas.

An on-ramp to a major Anchorage roadway also was damaged.

This video, shot by Julie Johnson of Anchorage, captures the moments of the quake's first tremors, which eventually knock the camera over. She grew up in California and was familiar with earthquakes "but this was next-level", she said.
