Turkey seeks arrest of Saudi officials over Khashoggi killing

CIA Director to Brief Lawmakers on Saudi Journalist's Murder

"There's a smoking saw", Graham said, referring to reports from the Turkish government that said Saudi agents used a bone saw to dismember Khashoggi after he was killed in the Istanbul consulate, where he had gone to obtain paperwork enabling him to marry his fiancee.

"And we're going to continue to press for answers".

Panelist and Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, a former colleague of journalist Jamal Khashoggi who was allegedly murdered at the order of the Saudi crown prince, interjected with his perspective.

Haspel met with a small group of senators, including leadership and the chairmen and top Democrats on the key national security committees, after senators in both parties complained that she didn't attend an all-Senate briefing with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary Jim Mattis last week.

"I talked directly to the prince in Buenos Aires, telling him that we need better answers on what happened to Khashoggi and who is responsible for it", he said.

Pompeo and Mattis tried to dissuade senators from punishing Saudi Arabia with the resolution, saying US involvement in the Yemen conflict is central to the Trump administration's broader goal of containing Iranian influence in the Middle East.

The Saudi government went into damage control mode, with a spokesperson for the Saudi Embassy, Fatimah Baeshen, saying the kingdom maintains its "steadfast" commitment to the US-Saudi relationship and does "categorically reject" accusations linking the prince to the killing.

"I can not support arms sales to Saudi Arabia as long as he's in charge of this country", Graham told reporters.

In turn, the Republican Senator from South Carolina Lindsey Graham is sure that holding this briefing will make it hard for the White house "efforts to protect" both the Prince and the relationship with Saudi Arabia as a whole.

Trump reaffirms plan for second North Korea summit plan
About 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea, mostly traveling via China, since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. The North Korean leader said he would visit Seoul "in the near future", during his third summit with Moon in September.

Turkish officials have searched the consulate, the consul-general's residence, a forest in Istanbul and two villas in the northwestern province of Yalova, but Khashoggi's remains have still not been found.

Saudi Arabia has detained 21 people and says it is seeking the death penalty for five.

A group of the US senators introduced a resolution on Wednesday urging the USA government to hold the crown prince accountable for a number of actions, including the Khashoggi killing and contributing to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

But it has strongly denied the crown prince was involved.

The Turkish semi-public agency Anadolu reported that the prosecutor's office had requested for the arrest warrant for Qahtani and Asiri and a court in Istanbul confirmed it.

Riyadh could "address those concerns" by extraditing the suspects to Turkey, the official said.

Erdogan maintained pressure on Riyadh this week in an interview with reporters during his visit to South America, urging the kingdom to provide further details.

The U.S. has slapped sanctions on Saudis involved in the murder.
