A Massive Winter Storm Blankets Parts Of The US, Kills Five

Is it a snowstorm or a blizzard

Metro areas that are included in warnings are Kansas City, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Washington D.C., Roanoke and Greensboro - these areas are most likely to see unsafe travel conditions and heavy snow and/or ice according to The Weather Channel.

Baltimore is also in the path of these heavier bands of snowfall, with 4 to 6 inches of snow predicted for Sunday.

A massive winter storm hit the US Rockies and Plains on Friday then punched east, with snow set to assault a 1,800-mile (1,609 km) corridor through the weekend, creating transportation "havoc" in the middle of the country.

Parts of the Mid-Atlantic are bracing for the first major snow storm of the new year.

Parts of central IL have registered record snowfalls after a winter storm struck and then lingered for much of the weekend.

According to the Associated Press, at least five people were killed in crashes on icy roads in Kansas and Missouri. Police said the driver of a military surplus vehicle lost control due to slick road conditions on Saturday night in Pulaski County, leading the vehicle to be struck by two tractor-trailers. The storm dumped more than 30cm of snow in several parts of Missouri and almost 60cm in one city.

Jacksonville, some 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Springfield, got even more at almost 16 inches (40 centimeters). A foot was recorded in Columbia and 17 inches in Harrisburg as of 9 a.m.

The snow is due to taper off by 4:35 p.m. ET when the Kansas City Chiefs host the Indianapolis Colts in an National Football League playoff game, Brink said.

He said police had recommended the driver face a charge of reckless driving. The driver veered into oncoming traffic and struck a passenger vehicle .

In Kansas City, Missouri, "we are up to 7.2 inches of snow so far with this storm", the local National Weather Service office said at 7 a.m. ET.

It began to spread east into the Mid-Atlantic region, with between 5 and 10 inches of snow expected in the Washington area, including parts of northern and central Maryland, by Sunday.

Springfield's State Journal-Register reports the state capital broke a 55-year record for daily snowfall on Saturday.

In Kansas, three people died Friday in traffic accidents, authorities said Saturday: A 62-year-old man in a vehicle that struck a barrier wall on the Kansas Turnpike, a semi-truck driver whose vehicle collided with another truck and a driver whose vehicle struck an oncoming vehicle and ran into a ditch.

The storm knocked out power for almost 200,000 people in Virginia and North Carolina on Sunday, according to PowerOutage.us.

Meteorologists expect snow to come down over a wide area Saturday evening, from North Carolina to Pennsylvania and from Kansas to New Jersey. The storm is moving east and is expected to persist throughout Sunday, with flight disruptions extending into the work week.

The storm could bring a foot of snow to Washington, D.C. Sunday.
