Federal Bureau of Investigation 'probed whether Donald Trump secretly worked for Russian Federation after Comey firing'

BEDMINSTER TOWNSHIP NJ- NOVEMBER 20 President-elect Donald Trump greets Rudy Giuliani at the clubhouse at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster Township N.J. on Sunday Nov. 20 2016

Agents and senior FBI officials had grown suspicious of Trump's ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign but held off on opening an investigation into him, the people said, in part because they were uncertain how to proceed with an inquiry of such sensitivity and magnitude. Trump has repeatedly slammed the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt" and insisted there was "NO COLLUSION" with Russian Federation. "Campaigns leak polling data all the time", Giuliani said, before decrying the focus on the investigation as a "joke" and "total mockery" that "only happens because 75 percent of the press hates Trump".

The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, called the Times' report "absurd" and said Comey was sacked for being "a disgraced partisan hack".

The bureau struck a counterintelligence investigation into the matter after Trump fired director James Comey, the Times reported, citing ex-law enforcement officials and others who were familiar with the probe. Unlike former president (Barack) Obama who let Russian Federation and other foreign adversaries push America around, President Trump has actually been tough on Russian Federation, ? the White House Press Secretary said.

United States President Donald Trump is not new to investigations, be it over his reported affairs or tax evasion allegations.

The FBI did not respond to a query on the alleged investigation against Trump.

The FBI investigation was soon folded into Robert Mueller's inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 vote and possible collusion between his campaign and Moscow, it said, adding that it was unclear if the counterintelligence aspect was still being pursued.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that Comey was sacked for just cause and that Trump has never favoured Russian Federation.

CNN also reported that investigators are examining whether conflicting public statements by Trump and his team would be considered an attempt to obstruct justice. However, it is not known if he is still looking into the investigation against Trump.

Friday's remarkable report is sure to ramp up the pressure for a White House already feeling the heat from months of investigations.
