Poland arrests Huawei employee on spying charges

Hmmm: Huawei exec arrested for espionage in Poland

Polish authorities on Friday arrested Weijing and a former Polish security official on spying allegations, a move that could fuel Western security concerns about the telecoms equipment maker.

Stanislaw Zaryn, a spokesman for the Polish security services, said the country's Internal Security Agency (ISA) detained a Chinese citizen and a former Polish security official on January 8 over spying allegations.

"In accordance with the terms and conditions of Huawei's labour contract, we have made this decision because the incident in question has brought Huawei into disrepute", state-run China Daily quoted the statement by Huawei.

It's the world's biggest maker of telecommunications equipment but has been banned in the US since 2012 over fears it's a security risk.

TVP reported that Huawei's office in Poland had been searched by the ABW.

The two men were arrested Tuesday, according to Poland's Internal Security Agency.

The United States, which views China's growing strength in technology as a strategic threat, has lobbied allies to ban Huawei from 5G networks on security grounds.

Going forward, he will serve as special adviser to the company, assisting "as required", Huawei Canada President Eric Li said in a memo to staff obtained by Reuters.

Poland is Huawei's headquarters for Central and Eastern Europe and the Nordic region.

"The Chinese national is a businessman working in a major electronics company. the Pole is a person known in circles associated with cyber business", he said.

Bowater said the GCSB had still not spoken to Huawei directly about the reasons why Spark's proposal was declined, which he said would be helpful.

He's a very mature lad for his age, he knows what direction he's going in and he's improving all the time . It has been left short in only one position at the moment because I think that Hudson-Odoi is improving.

The Chinese national is a former employee of the country's consulate in the Baltic Sea port of Gdansk, according to TVPInfo television. Further indictments are expected, he said.

If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in prison.

The Wall Street Journal reports that a Huawei executive has been arrested in Poland after being discovered as a spy for the Chinese government.

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has sacked a Polish employee accused by the country's security services of spying.

The Chinese suspect was named by TVP Info only as "Weijing W".

He is a graduate of the Beijing University of Foreign Studies.

Now the Polish counterintelligence agency believes it has hard evidence of Huawei's employees' wrongdoings.

A former member of the Polish intelligence service was also detained on spying charges. Canada detained the company's chief financial officer in early December on charges related to Iranian sanctions. The US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Norway are among them.

The Chinese ministry of foreign affairs said it was "greatly concerned" and that it expects Poland to "justly" manage the case.

The Polish citizen previously held director-level positions in the country's law-enforcement agencies, said Stanislaw Zaryn, a spokesman for Poland's security coordination office.
