Raptors, Patrick McCaw Agree to Deal

Report: Warriors ask NBA to investigate Cavs' signing, release of Patrick McCaw

After only a week in Cleveland, McCaw was waived before his contract was guaranteed.

The Warriors passed on matching Cleveland's two-year, $6 million offer sheet to McCaw over luxury-tax concerns. McCaw's representatives say that is not the case.

Now, McCaw, per The Athletic's Shams Charania, has interest from several contenders after becoming an unrestricted free agent. He signed a two-year, $6 million offer sheet with Cleveland, but was let go just three days into his tenure. But given playing time, something he did not get when he was a Warrior, could produce something different.

McCaw was sidelined for nearly two months with a bone bruise in his lower back near the end of last season after a horrific fall during a game at Sacramento.

But his poor performance wasn't a good enough excuse for the Warriors, who asked the National Basketball Association to investigate the situation.

Cavs Pat McCaw

McCaw, who won two National Basketball Association titles as a swingman for the Warriors, plans to sign a veteran's minimum contract with the Toronto Raptors, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Warriors declined to match the offer.

For the Cavs, they would gain favor with agents, which is invaluable for an organization that plays in a small market and isn't exactly attractive to players. Golden State could've matched.

Whatever the real reasoning for the sign-and-release was, the Cavs are now subject to an investigation.

With the way things have been going for the Cavs, who now have the NBA's worst mark at 8-34, that could be the first pick in the entire draft. Investigators likely feel that the team tried to circumvent his restricted free agency. The pick would, per the CBA, be lost. He would sign another one-year contract the following year, and one more in 2000. Wouldn't mind seeing him come back on a 10-day contract. After he cleared waivers, he was free to sign with any team. The only reason that Minnesota was punished is that emails were leaked after an agent dispute. It's also reportedly the Cavs might re-sign McCaw, making his non-guaranteed deal seem even sketchier. The Cavs, who could have the No. 1 overall pick, could lose out on the generational talent that is Zion Williamson. It isn't worth the backlash, and this punishment would not fit the crime.

McCaw and the Warriors played a bit of chicken, the Cavaliers put an end to it, then sent McCaw on his.
