Jeff Bezos says National Enquirer threatened to publish revealing pics

Images of Jessica Sanchez and Jeff Bezos were threatened to be released by AMI Bezos alleged

Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos said Thursday that he was the target of an extortion attempt by the National Enquirer, which he said threatened to publish embarrassing photos of him if he didn't halt his investigation into how the tabloid obtained private texts and photos between him and his mistress.

Mr. Bezos said he chose to publish the emails sent to his team "rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail", despite the "personal cost and embarrassment they threaten".

Mr Bezos said the magazine's parent company American Media Inc (AMI) wanted him to drop an investigation into how it obtained his private messages.

According to emails included by Mr Bezos in his blog, an AMI lawyer proposed on Wednesday that the photos would not be published in return for a public statement "affirming that [Bezos and his team] have no knowledge or basis" to suspect such a motive. "Of course I don't want personal photos published, but I also won't participate in their well-known practice of blackmail, political favors, political attacks, and corruption".

Amazon chief Jeff Bezos has released emails he claimed to have received from USA tabloid The National Enquirer, in which the publication is shown to be extorting him.

A spokesman and an attorney for AMI did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

The National Enquirer, run by David Pecker, a friend of Mr Trump, has historically been supportive of the US President, and previous year it was implicated in payments made before the election to a woman who claimed she had had an affair with Mr Trump, made in order to silence her.

Mr Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, said last month they were getting divorced.

"Sarri is the coach who has got the best out of me as a player", he said after Saturday's victory. Chelsea were widely expected to sign a midfielder to deputize for Jorginho .

In an extraordinarily personal online post, Mr Bezos said intermediaries of Mr David Pecker, chairman of American Media Inc (AMI), the owner of The Enquirer, had approached him to stop his investigation.

In Mr Bezos' post on Thursday, he also published several e-mails between Mr de Becker's lawyer, Mr Martin Singer, and AMI's lawyer, Mr Jon Fine, and chief content officer, Mr Dylan Howard. "I prefer to stand up, roll this log over, and see what crawls out".

Bezos has publicly criticized the Trump administration on numerous occasions, as has the Washington Post.

Other photos described in the email include half-dressed selfies of Bezos in a variety of situations, and photos of his new partner Lauren Sanchez that Howard described as "revealing her cleavage".

"If we do not agree to affirmatively publicize that specific lie, they say they'll publish the photos, and quickly", Bezos writes.

That admission was part of a deal between AMI and federal prosecutors, who agreed to not pursue charges against the company for secretly assisting Trump's campaign by paying $150,000 United States to a Playboy model for the rights to her story about an alleged affair with the then-candidate.

Bezos noted that the email "got my attention", but said that "any personal embarrassment AMI could cause me takes a back seat because there's a much more important matter involved here". Bezos commissioned de Becker - his longtime security consultant - to investigate how the material fell into the Enquirer's hands.
