Notorious Mexican drug cartel boss 'El Chapo' found guilty in U.S. trial

One of the trial's most memorable pieces of evidence came from El Chapo's mistress Lucero Guadalupe Sanchez Lopez, who testified she was in bed in a safe house with an on-the-run Guzman in 2014 when Mexican marines started breaking down his door.

Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was found guilty on all of his 10 counts in a NY courthouse Tuesday, ending a three-month trial.

Convicted by a jury of eight women and four men, he could face life in a USA maximum-security federal prison.

As the judge read the verdict, Guzman stared at the jury, and his wife watched the scene, both with resignation in their faces. Once the jury left the room, he and his wife Emma Coronel, put their hands to their hearts and gave each other the thumbs up sign.

The legend of Guzman was burnished by two dramatic escapes he made from Mexican prisons and by a Robin Hood image he cultivated among Sinaloa's poor.

The 11-week trial featured testimonies from more than 50 witnesses and offered one of the most detailed insights into the Sinaloa Cartel - named after the state in Mexico where El Chapo was born - ever.

It's been roughly three months since El Chapo's trial began.

Guzman's lawyers say he was set up as a "fall guy" by Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a powerful drug lord from Sinaloa who remains at large. "We were faced with extraordinary and unprecedented obstacles in defending Joaquin, including his detention in solitary confinement", the statement said, Reuters reported.

The evidence included testimony from 14 cooperators.

The 61-year-old was a key player in the Mexican drug cartel landscape.

Even when Guzman was recaptured in 2016 before his extradition to the United States, he was plotting another escape, prosecutor Andrea Goldbarg said in closing arguments.

Guzmán, once listed on Forbes' Billionaires List, has always been a slippery and near-mythical figure. Colombian trafficker Alex Cifuentes caused a stir by testifying that former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto took a $100 million bribe from Guzman.

In one of the trial's final days, Guzman told the judge he would not testify in his own defence.

This came after his second, short-lived escape from prison.

He was seized again in 2014, but pulled off his best known escape the following year when he disappeared into a tunnel dug into his cell in a maximum security prison.
