Trump Is Expected to Launch an 'American AI Initiative' Today

Trump administration unveils order to prioritise and promote AI

The White House emphasized the importance of not just safeguarding American AI research, but ensuring artificial intelligence development around the globe is conducted "in a manner consistent with our nation's values, policies, and priorities". The President was returning to the White House after his annual physical exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

United States President Donald Trump on Monday (Feb 11) ordered the USA administration to give greater priority to artificial intelligence, a move seen as firing up a battle for leadership with China.

"Today's announcement demonstrates that President Trump recognises that the United States can not coast on our thriving innovation economy to maintain our leadership in AI but must actively engage so that it does not become a threat to our national and economic security interests", he said.

The directive will call for better coordination across government agencies, developing regulatory and ethics rules for the use of artificial intelligence, and require federal departments to track spending on research and development of AI.

United States envoy: more work needed before Trump-Kim summit in Vietnam
Both sides signed an agreement that focuses on North Korea's denuclearization effort, though it was short on details. Biegun agreed with his North Korean counterpart Kim Hyok Chol to hold further talks ahead of the event, it added.

The last time Trump announced a potentially landmark scientific initiative, it was for a much less credible cause his call for a new military branch, the "Space Force".

Preparing workers: Agencies will train people to prepare for the changes resulting from AI (such as automaton), through apprenticeships, fellowships and training programs. As part of the initiative, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy will craft guidelines aimed at supporting the development of "reliable, robust, trustworthy, secure, portable, and interoperable AI systems".

The order - dubbed the American AI Initiative - is expected to give guidance on regulation. America is a bit late to the game when it comes to government action, falling behind countries like China, Canada, and France who have pledged millions of dollars and jobs to foster research and innovation. It also may not be sufficiently comprehensive in addressing the threat to America's A.I. dominance posed by China, a nation that vowed to become the world leader in A.I.in July 2017 and hopes to have a $150 billion A.I. industry in its economy by 2030. Lastly, the USA will foster global collaboration for AI. Eighteen countries including Canda, Denmark, France, Mexico, Singapore, and South Korea now have fully funded AI strategies in place, but none have the public-private infrastructure and hardware/software pipeline that exists in China.

The announcement was a little odd as AI is supposed to be the technology which will take away large numbers of factory jobs and is the very thing that Trump's own supporters fear the most, other than racial minorities and people with different sexual preferences.
